BBL Recovery Must-Haves: What to Have Ready Before Surgery

A smooth BBL recovery rests on two things: nutrition that gives your body what it needs while it repairs, and a setup that lets you rest and sleep without putting pressure on your buttocks.

Our top BBL must-haves list covers four categories:

1. BBL Pillow System

2. Compression Garments

3. Wound Care & Hygiene Supplies

4. Nutrition Essentials

A plan for home help and medical clearance ties them all together. Setting everything up two weeks before surgery means you can spend your first days resting and eating well instead of shopping. Your surgeon's instructions always come first, so treat this list as a starting point and adjust it to the guidance you are given.

Quick Answers

What do I really need for BBL recovery? These things should be at the very top of your list: a BBL pillow setup for resting and sleeping, the compression garments your surgeon specifies, wound care and hygiene supplies, and easy protein-rich food and fluids with digestion support such as fiber and an approved stool softener. You'll also need a trusted caregiver for the first days.

What should I eat after a BBL? Protein at every meal, fiber added gradually, and plenty of fluids, in forms that are easy to take while you are resting. Many people also add a surgery-specific supplement such as Before + After Vitals, which can help get everything you need while you're recovering. More on that in the sections below.

Is a BBL pillow the same as a donut cushion? No. Seat cushions, often donut-shaped, are made for sitting and are only useful for short periods your surgeon approves. A sleep system such as the Sleep Again Pillow System paired with the BBL Add On Set is built for resting and sleeping.

When should I start preparing? Two weeks before surgery is a realistic start. That leaves time for medical clearance, supplement stop dates, shopping, and meal prep.

How long do I have to avoid sitting? Plastic surgery guidance says pressure on the buttocks should be limited for the first six weeks, because transferred fat is vulnerable to pressure while it establishes a blood supply.¹ Follow your own surgeon's exact timeline.

Do I need to change my supplements before a BBL? Possibly. Several common supplements affect bleeding and are often paused before surgery, and arnica is one to ask your surgeon about before you start. Check out our guide on Vitamins to Avoid After Surgery to learn more.

Our recommendation: Start with rest and fuel together.

1. Which BBL pillow do you need for resting and sleeping?

Your first category is the pillow setup, because most of BBL recovery happens lying down and your surgeon will ask you to keep pressure off your buttocks. The pillow you choose decides how well you can rest and sleep in the weeks that matter most.

If you have searched for a BBL pillow, you have probably seen the same product everywhere: a donut-shaped seat cushion sold for everyday use. A cushion like that can help for a short, surgeon-approved seated moment, such as a meal. It solves one part of the problem. It does not help you sleep, and sleep is where you will spend a large share of the first weeks.

The Sleep Again Pillow System was built for lying down. It includes two contoured side pillows that cradle the back and hips, an upper body wedge, a leg support wedge, and a head pillow, with removable, washable slipcovers on every piece. For BBL recovery, you add the BBL Add On Set, which is sold separately and includes two foam wedges. An extra-wide wedge can be double-stacked under your knees to fully elevate your lower buttocks, and a cushioned back wedge lifts the upper buttocks and removes pressure around the hip area. Together, they are meant to let you rest and sleep in positions that keep weight off the area you are protecting, as long as your surgeon approves those positions.

How does the pillow connect to healing?

Rest and nutrition do different jobs, and recovery needs both. Good sleep gives your body time to repair, and food supplies the protein and other nutrients it uses for that work. A setup that lets you sleep comfortably without putting weight on your surgical area supports the first part, and a food-first plan supports the second. That pairing is the reason we think of the pillow and your nutrition as one system. No pillow can promise an outcome, and your surgeon's positioning rules come first.

What belongs on your core positioning list?

Keep the list short. One plastic surgery resource describes a triangle-shaped "BBL pillow" that helps offload pressure and notes that most patients sleep on their stomachs until the surgeon clears them.¹ It also relays one surgeon's suggestion of an avocado-shaped pool float with an opening for the buttocks for people who struggle to sleep face down.¹ The core list is below.

  • Sleep Again Pillow System with the BBL Add-On Set, for resting and sleeping
  • A cutout pool float or a donut-style BBL cushion for daytime sitting, if your surgeon allows sitting and approves the style
  • A raised toilet seat or a similar aid if your surgeon agrees
  • A sturdy tray table so food comes to you
  • A longer phone charger and a bedside basket so you do not have to twist or reach

Try your setup in your bed or recliner before surgery, with your caregiver, and wash the slipcovers so everything is ready. If a position only works one way, you want to know that before the day you need it.

2. What compression gear do you need after a BBL?

You need the compression garment or garments your surgeon specifies, usually more than one so you always have a clean one on hand. Guidance from plastic surgeons says patients wear a garment nearly constantly for the first month, taking it off only to shower, then at least 12 hours a day in the second month, often overnight.¹ Your surgeon may differ on both timing and style.

Before surgery:

  • Ask which garment type and compression level you need, and whether any foam or boards go under it
  • Buy or borrow a second garment so you can launder one
  • Check that the garment can be put on and removed without help, or arrange for someone who can help
  • Pick a size you can fit when swollen, since swelling changes your measurements

Bring the garment with you on surgery day if your surgeon asks. Never loosen or adjust compression without permission.

3. What wound care and hygiene supplies should you have ready?

Stock gentle, unscented basics and follow your surgeon's wound care instructions exactly. Your list will be tailored to your incisions and any drains, but most people want the following.

  • Gauze, absorbent pads and medical tape if your surgeon provides no supplies
  • Disposable underpads for the bed and the car seat
  • Unscented wipes and a mild soap
  • A handheld showerhead and a shower chair, if standing is tiring
  • Clean towels and a spare set of sheets
  • Hand sanitizer, so you can clean your hands before touching a dressing

Leave creams, gels and silicone alone until your incisions are fully closed and your surgeon approves. That includes arnica gel. Our guide to BBL scars covers scar care once you are cleared.

4. Nutrition: What should you eat and drink during BBL recovery?

Eat protein at every meal, add fiber gradually, and drink enough fluid that your urine stays pale, with electrolytes if you struggle to keep up. Nutrition is the other half of resting well. Appetite is often low in the first days, and lying down makes eating awkward, so ease matters as much as nutrition. Plan food and fluids that are easy to prepare and easy to take while you are resting.

Start with Before + After Vitals and Sulinu's nutrition guides

If you want one place to start, start here. Before + After Vitals is an all-in-one surgery nutrition powder formulated to support the body before and after cosmetic procedures, with patented ingredients including PureWay-C®, LactoSpore®, Bimuno® GOS and Aminogen®. You mix it into a cold or warm drink or a smoothie, which makes it easy to take while you are resting.

Sulinu's nutrition guides cover the questions that come up once you are home. The Ultimate Surgery Bundle is a digital download of eight guides, including ones on protein, hydration, constipation, and smoothie recipes, and the swelling guide covers eating while you manage swelling. Check any supplement with your surgeon before you start.

Food first

Protein supplies the amino acids your body uses to repair tissue. Foods that are easy to prepare and eat include:

  • Eggs, either scrambled or boiled
  • Greek yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Soft fish such as salmon or cod
  • Shredded chicken or turkey
  • Tofu and lentil soups
  • Protein shakes, if your surgeon approves

Pair those with fruit and vegetables that supply vitamin C, and with whole grains or oats for fiber. Our guides to what to eat before surgery and how much protein you need after surgery cover amounts in more depth. If you are taking in very little, ask your surgeon or a dietitian whether a supplemental shake makes sense.

Hydration and the bendable straw

Drink small amounts often. A bendable straw and a lidded bottle let you sip while lying down, with no need to shift your position. Water works, and broth or an electrolyte drink can add variety. Our post on what to drink after surgery has more ideas.

Digestion and stool softeners

Pain medication and anesthesia can slow digestion, and so can spending most of the day lying still. Constipation is a common complaint after surgery. Straining is uncomfortable and you want to avoid it while you are healing. Ask your surgeon which stool softener or gentle laxative to buy ahead of time, and when to start. Fiber from food and plenty of fluids help too, as do short walks if your surgeon allows them. Do not add products without checking, since some interact with your prescriptions.

How do rest and nutrition work together after a BBL?

Treat your pillow setup and your meals as one plan. The pillow system lets you rest and sleep while you protect your surgical area, and your meals and fluids give your body the building blocks it uses while you rest. If you only do one, you cover half of recovery. When both are in place before surgery, the first weeks are simpler, because the decisions are already made. Two weeks out, set up your bed and stock your freezer in the same weekend, and browse Shop All for your nutrition options at the same time.

What else do you need at home and in your plan?

Beyond the four categories, you need an adult to stay with you for at least the first days, a ride home, a clear path through the house and written clearance from your doctors. Your surgeon sets the caregiver rules, but plan on help with meals, medications, garments, positioning and bathroom trips.

  • Caregiver: Confirm who will stay with you, for how long and who can step in if plans change
  • Medical clearance: Complete required labs, a physical and any clearance letters well before surgery
  • Transportation: Arrange a ride home and to follow-up visits, with a pillow or cushion for lying across the back seat if your surgeon allows
  • Prescriptions: Fill them before the day so nothing needs a last-minute trip
  • Work and family: Arrange time off and childcare, and tell your workplace you may not be able to sit
  • Home setup: Clear walkways, move essentials to waist height and prepare a resting area
  • Entertainment: Tablets, audiobooks and a mounted phone stand for lying face down

What is the BBL preparation timeline?

Start about two weeks out, with most shopping done the week before, and save only final checks for the day before.

Two weeks before surgery

  • Review your surgeon's supplement and medication stop list, and mark the dates on a calendar
  • Order your nutrition support, pillow system, compression garments, and hygiene supplies
  • Confirm your caregiver and transportation
  • Complete labs and clearance paperwork
  • Begin preparing and freezing meals

The week before surgery

  • Stop the supplements and medications your surgeon listed, on the dates given
  • Do a grocery shop for soft, protein-rich foods and drinks
  • Test your seating and sleeping setup at home
  • Wash garments and bedding
  • Pack a bag with comfortable front-closure clothing

The day before surgery

  • Follow your surgeon's fasting instructions exactly
  • Set up your recovery space and charge your devices
  • Put fluids, snacks, and medications within reach of where you will rest
  • Confirm arrival time and who is driving
  • Rest

Supporting Your Body's BBL Recovery

A good checklist covers comfort and logistics. Nutrition covers the rest, because your body needs enough protein, vitamin C, fluids, and digestive support from the first day. Most people find it easiest to plan meals ahead and keep drinks within reach.

Here's the part that doesn't get enough attention: what you're eating (and supplementing) both before and after surgery plays a real role in how efficiently your body repairs tissue.

Sulinu's Before + After Vitals is the world's first comprehensive wound healing supplement built specifically for surgery recovery — a NutriSurgical formula, meaning it addresses the surgical healing process directly rather than functioning as a general multivitamin. The formula includes 29 surgeon-approved ingredients, including patented ingredients and a few core components that impact your recovery.

The formula includes 29 surgical essentials:

BioEnhanced Vitamin C

A patented, rapid-absorbing form that some research suggests achieves significantly higher tissue retention than standard ascorbate formulations. Vitamin C is foundational to collagen synthesis, immune defense, and antioxidant protection during the inflammatory phase, all of which directly influence how your body manages bruising, swelling, and the quality of scar tissue over time. It's also formulated to avoid the GI side effects that typically make high-dose vitamin C difficult to tolerate post-surgery.

Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides

A patented version that some studies indicate may support meaningful improvement in skin elasticity in a matter of weeks. Collagen peptides don't just add collagen. They signal skin cells to produce more of their own. This matters at every stage: for swelling resolution as tissues remodel, for bruising clearance as vascular integrity is restored, and for scar quality as new tissue architecture forms.

Proteolytic Enzymes

Patented enzymes that, when combined with protein, some research suggests, can help double total amino acid absorption. Amino acids are the building blocks your body uses to repair incision tissue, clear inflammatory debris, and build new scar architecture. Getting more of them absorbed, not just consumed, is the goal.

Biome Synbiotics

Surgery disrupts gut health, and disrupted gut health disrupts everything else: nutrient absorption, immune function, inflammatory response. Prolonged bruising and swelling are often downstream of a gut that isn't processing and delivering nutrients efficiently. This patented prebiotic and probiotic blend is designed to survive stomach acid and arrive active in the gut, supporting the digestive foundation that makes all other healing nutrients work.

The formula also includes targeted amino acids (L-glutamine, L-citrulline, L-arginine), essential vitamins (A, B-complex, C, D3), and minerals (zinc, copper, manganese, iron) — all in clinically relevant dosages, not token inclusions.

No GMOs. No gluten. No artificial colors. No ingredients that interfere with each other. Everything in Before + After Vitals is there because it has a specific job in your recovery.

Scoop. Mix. Heal.

BBL Recovery Nutrition

Surgery recovery means your body needs more than a standard multivitamin can offer. Before + After Vitals delivers patented ingredients formulated to support tissue repair and circulation during recovery — no piecing together separate pills required.

Don't stop at supplements. The Ultimate Surgery Bundle hands you eight expert guides so nothing about recovery catches you off guard.

What practical tips make BBL recovery easier?

Plan for lying down, because most of recovery happens that way. A few small decisions make the first week smoother.

  • Set up a sleeping position before surgery and practice it
  • Keep a log of medication times so nothing is missed
  • Use your phone to set reminders for fluids and short walks
  • Keep a small bag of clean dressings and supplies at the bedside
  • Wear loose, soft clothing over your garment
  • Accept help, even for tasks you would normally do easily

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

  • Which supplements and medications should I stop, and on what dates?
  • When can I restart them?
  • Which garments do I need, and for how long?
  • How long must I avoid sitting, and how do I sit for meals or travel?
  • Which sleeping positions do you approve, and can I use a wedge pillow system to hold them?
  • Which aids do you recommend for sleeping and for the toilet?
  • Which stool softener should I use, and when should I start?
  • Can I use arnica, bromelain or any other supplement?
  • When can I shower, and how should I care for my incisions?
  • When can I return to work, driving and exercise?
  • What symptoms should make me call, and what is the after-hours number?

When to Contact Your Surgical Team

Call your surgeon, or seek emergency care when instructed, if you notice any of the following.

  • Fever or chills
  • Redness, warmth or swelling that is spreading
  • Drainage that has a strong odor, changes color or increases
  • Incisions that open
  • Severe or worsening pain that medication does not control
  • Calf pain or swelling, chest pain or shortness of breath (seek emergency care)
  • Skin over the buttocks that becomes dark, blue or very pale
  • Numbness, tingling or color change in your legs or feet
  • No bowel movement for several days despite following your plan

FAQs: BBL Recovery Must-Haves

1. What are the essential items after a BBL? Pressure-relieving BBL pillow for seating and sleeping, the right compression garments, wound care supplies, easy protein-rich foods, fluids, a stool softener your surgeon approves, and a caregiver. The checklist above groups them by category.

2. How do I sit to use the toilet after a BBL? Ask your surgeon before surgery. Many surgeons teach a way to keep weight on the thighs rather than the buttocks and may suggest a raised toilet seat. Practice with your caregiver in advance.

3. Is it normal for there to be a smell after a BBL? Some odor can come from drainage, dressings, or garments that need washing. A strong, foul, or worsening smell, especially with fever, redness, or increased drainage, needs a call to your surgeon.

4. Will my fat survive? Your surgeon is the right person to answer that. Following your instructions on pressure and garments, and keeping your follow-up visits, is the most useful thing you can do, and no checklist can promise an outcome.

5. How long do I need a caregiver? That is your surgeon's call. Most patients need someone for at least the first days, and some for longer.

6. Can I eat normally after a BBL? Most people ease into regular food. Start with light, protein-rich meals, add fiber slowly, and follow any restrictions you were given.

7. What should I drink in the first week? Water, an electrolyte drink, and Before + After Vitals are great options to ensure optimal hydration. Use a bendable straw so you can sip while face down.

8. Should I take a stool softener? Many people do, but ask which one and when to start. Your surgeon can fit it around your pain medication.

9. Do I need to stop certain vitamins before a BBL? Possibly. Bring a full list of supplements to your surgeon, who will tell you what to stop and when. Our supplements for BBL recovery guide explains what you need and what to avoid.

10. Can I sleep on my back after a BBL?
Flat back sleeping is discouraged after a BBL unless the pressure is taken off your buttocks. The Sleep Again Pillow System with the BBL Add On Set is designed to remove that pressure, with foam wedges that lift the buttocks off the surface so you can rest on your back.

11. When can I start sitting again? Plastic surgery guidance notes limits for the first six weeks, and your surgeon will explain how to build back up.¹

Born from clinical experience, stubborn integrity, and love.

My Story

In 2019, I closed a chapter as a surgical dietitian. Underneath the noise, I felt lost. One night, I remember standing alone in my kitchen and I prayed, "God, take this life and do something with it."

Three months later, on a camping trip, my husband and I connected with a plastic surgeon. I asked him an earnest question: "What do you give your patients to help them heal after surgery?"

He said, "Nothing. We send them home on arnica."

My stomach dropped. I thought of all the women choosing surgery to feel more at home in their bodies—brave, thoughtful, intentional—and being handed nothing more than a hope and a wish.

So I began searching for "the supplement" I wish I'd had for my patients. It didn't exist. What I found instead were formulas with:

  • Cheap, poorly absorbed ingredients
  • Subpar dosages that wouldn't move the needle
  • Prebiotics and Probiotics that were already dead on arrival
  • Deceptive marketing and a loud "push harder" message that didn't honor a woman's healing pace.

It took five years. Six figures in losses. Three near-bankruptcies. We didn't give up.

We created Sulinu—born from clinical experience, stubborn integrity, and a genuine love for women who are investing in themselves.

What makes Sulinu different:

  • Evidence-aligned dosages of nutrients that actually matter for post-op healing
  • Thoughtful formulation for absorption and synergy—not just a label full of buzzwords.
  • Details that care for you: from the functional bag design to the clarity of our education on the website. No fluff. No fear tactics. Just what works and why.

Is Sulinu a luxury? Yes. Because healing deserves precision.

Your body is not a problem to fix; it's a partner to support. Healing is a biological process that loves to be nourished.

I made Sulinu for the woman who leads with intention, who wants her recovery to reflect the care she's put into every other part of this decision. Thank you for being here. I'm honored to support your healing.

With care,
Kylie
